You'be probably said or heard the phrase, "I'm burnt out" before, right? Well, it turns out it's more than just a current mood, it's actually now recognized as a medical condition! Burnout is described as exhaustion due to chronic workplace stress, and has been defined by the World Health Organization as a clinical syndrome. Cases of this syndrome are also increasing at an alarming rate, which is at least bringing attention to workplace stress. You're twice as likely to experience burnout if you are in a high stress profession, like the medical field. Some of the symptoms that signify you are suffering from burnout are:
- Feelings of energy depletion or exhaustion.
- Increased mental distance from one's job, or feelings of negativism or cynicism related to one's job.
- Reduced professional efficacy.
